Flame Retardant Plywood Standards Tighten Across Southeast Asia
Following several high-profile hotel fires, ASEAN countries are harmonizing fire safety regulations. Flame retardant plywood must now undergo rigorous cone calorimeter testing and demonstrate low smoke toxicity. This has spurred innovation in impregnation treatments using phosphorus-nitrogen compounds that do not leach over time. Timber importers are shifting toward factory-treated panels with clear labeling. The change is expected to eliminate substandard imports and boost local processing capacity in Malaysia and the Philippines.
